The Experience

Someone’s waving a paintbrush in the dark before you even spot their face—there’s this hush, then a burst of color on canvas right in the middle of Gwanghwamun Theater. I didn’t expect to laugh so much at an art show, but our group was grinning like kids. The Painters (now eight of them, not four—I only learned that after) moved around the stage with this mix of swagger and goofiness, switching between painting and dancing so fast I sometimes lost track of what was happening. At one point, they spun Klimt’s “Kiss” out of gold paint while techno beats rattled my seat. It smelled faintly like acrylics and popcorn from somewhere behind us.

The crowd was a mix—families with little kids in strollers (the staff helped them find spots), some older couples, a few tourists like us who clearly didn’t know what to expect. Our local guide nudged me when Van Gogh’s self-portrait started taking shape—“Watch the eyes,” she whispered. I did, and for a second it felt like he was staring straight back at me through all that neon light and music. There were moments when the actors would break character just enough to wink or wave at someone in the audience; one guy tried to copy their dance move and nearly fell over his own feet. Nobody seemed to mind.

I’m still thinking about how quickly they shifted from wild urban dance to total silence as Michelangelo’s “Creation” came alive onstage—just hands reaching through shadows and blue light. It’s not really possible to explain how it feels unless you’re there with everyone else holding your breath for that last brushstroke. We left with a Lotte Mart voucher (which made for an odd but welcome snack stop after), still talking about whether we’d ever seen anything quite like it before. Maybe we hadn’t.
