The Experience

I’d seen Bukhansan’s jagged outline from the city before, but standing at the base early that morning, it felt way bigger than I’d pictured. Our guide—Mr. Kim—had this calm energy, like he belonged to the mountain more than the city. He handed us bottled water and checked our shoes (mine passed, barely), then we started climbing into the trees. The air smelled green and a bit sharp, almost piney but not quite. I remember my legs waking up fast—no gentle warmup here.

We stopped at Doseonsa Temple about halfway up. I didn’t expect that part—a sudden hush after city noise, monks moving quietly in grey robes. Incense drifted out from somewhere I couldn’t see. Mr. Kim explained a little about the temple’s history (I caught maybe half; my brain was still on the climb). Then he pointed at the granite steps ahead and grinned like he knew what was coming. The path got steeper and rougher after that, hands brushing cool stone every now and then for balance.

Near the top, my shirt stuck to my back and I was honestly wondering if I’d make it. But then you hit this ridge where Seoul just explodes into view—tiny buildings stretching forever under your feet. There was wind up there, real wind that made me laugh out loud for no reason except it felt good. We ate our packed Korean lunch boxes on a rock ledge—I can’t even tell you what half of it was but salty seaweed and rice taste different when you’ve earned them like that.

The hike down felt lighter somehow—maybe just relief or maybe because Mr. Kim started telling stories about people who’d tried to summit in winter (he showed us snow crampons; glad we didn’t need them). My knees were wobbly by the time we reached the van again, but I still think about that view sometimes when city life gets noisy again.

What’s included
