The Experience

I’d seen Bukhansan’s jagged outline from the city before, but standing at the base early that morning, it felt way bigger than I’d pictured. Our guide—Mr. Kim—had this calm energy, like he belonged to the mountain more than the city. He handed us bottled water and checked our shoes (mine passed, barely), then we started climbing into the trees. The air smelled green and a bit sharp, almost piney but not quite.
