The experience
The day starts at the Songdo Skywalk, Korea's longest over-water walkway, where you get panoramic views of the ocean and coastline before heading into the city proper. From there the tour moves through Gamcheon Culture Village, built in staircase fashion on a coastal mountainside and nicknamed the Machu Picchu of Busan for its steep layout and colorful murals. The narrow alleys are lined with art installations and photo spots created by residents, so there's time to walk and shoot.
Next comes BIFF Square, the city's movie district, then two of Busan's most active markets back-to-back. Gukje Market sprawls across multiple connected alleyways stocked with everything from textiles to street food. It grew after the Korean War when refugees set up stalls to survive. Jagalchi Fish Market, just a short walk away, is Korea's largest seafood market and the one most visitors recognize. You can eat fresh raw fish right there at the stalls, and the market is still run mostly by women vendors known as Jagalchi Ajumma. The guide handles the skip-the-line access at both.
You'll drive up Hwangnyeongsan Mountain to the observatory at the summit for a sweeping view of Busan's skyline and harbor, then finish at Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, a rare seaside Buddhist temple built in 1376 on a clifftop overlooking the ocean. Most Korean temples sit in the mountains, so this one's setting is unusual. The temple complex includes the Haesu Gwaneum Daebul statue, the main sanctuary, a shrine, a cave sanctuary, and a three-story pagoda, all facing the water. Lunch (Korean BBQ or vegetarian) is included partway through the day.
