The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way the colored houses of Gamcheon Culture Village looked under streetlights — not bright, more like a soft watercolor bleeding into the dark. Our guide (Minji? I hope I got her name right) handed me a silly hat for the first photo and laughed when I hesitated. “It’s good for the camera,” she said. I could smell something frying from a window above us, maybe fish cakes? The village was so much quieter at night than during the day; even our footsteps felt too loud sometimes. It was just seven of us, and nobody seemed in a rush.

We moved through Busan in this little minibus, windows fogged up from all our talking. At Shinsegae Centum City, Minji pointed out how the city lights tangled with reflections on the river — she kept finding angles I would’ve missed on my own. She showed me how to pose so it didn’t feel awkward (I’m not usually in front of cameras). At one point, someone tried to say “Busanhang” like a local and we all cracked up. The photographer caught that too — those are probably my favorite shots from the night.

Later up on Hwangnyeong Mountain, the wind cut through my jacket but wow, you could see every bit of Busan glittering below. Someone handed around hot tea from a thermos (not included but honestly saved me). The bridge lights kept shifting colors while we tried to guess what was next — blue? purple? It felt less like posing for pictures and more like just being there together. When we finally got dropped off at Namcheon Station, I kept thinking about that view from above — still do sometimes when I see city lights anywhere else.
