The Experience

I’ll never forget how our Busan day started—one minute we were blinking in the bright light outside the cruise terminal, the next we were piling into this van with five strangers who somehow felt like friends by lunchtime. Our guide, Minji, had my name on a sign (I always get nervous about that part), and she just grinned and said, “Ready for a real Busan day?” I thought I was. But then we hit Haedong Yonggungsa Temple—the salt air, incense smoke, those 108 steps down with ocean spray in your face. It’s not like any temple I’ve seen; you hear waves crashing right below the prayer halls. Minji told us about the dragon legend—I’m not sure I got all of it but standing there with my shoes off on cool stone, I felt something old and good.

After that we ducked into a hanok café tucked behind a wooden gate—time slowed down there. Someone played gayageum softly in the corner (I’d never heard it before; it sounds sort of watery?), and Minji ordered us black sesame lattes that tasted nutty and almost smoky. I tried to say thank you in Korean—Li laughed at my accent but helped me out. The cherry blossoms were out near Samik Apartments—a pink tunnel over rainbow buildings—and petals stuck to my sleeve as we walked. There were families taking photos everywhere; it felt festive but not staged.

The city changed gears fast after that—Jagalchi Fish Market is loud and smells like brine and fried squid, women yelling “Oiso! Boiso! Saiso!” (Minji said it means come, see, buy). I bought some dried anchovies without meaning to—she winked at me like “that’s how it goes.” We wandered through Gukje Market too; honestly you could get lost for hours there between socks and phone cases and kimchi stands. BIFF Square was neon-bright even in daylight and I burned my tongue on hotteok from a street stall—worth it though.

We ended up at Songdo Yonggung Cloud Bridge late afternoon—the wind up there is strong enough to make you laugh out loud or grab someone’s arm if you’re nervous about heights (I definitely did). The view is wild: blue water below, city behind you, nothing between except glass panels under your feet. On the way back Minji asked what surprised us most—I said “the mix of quiet places and chaos,” which sounded cheesy but she nodded like she knew exactly what I meant. Sometimes travel just sits with you for a while after.
