The experience
The tour departs from your Johannesburg hotel and heads into Soweto along routes that pass the mine dumps and colonial-era buildings left from the gold rush and Apartheid years. The first stop is Hector Pieterson Museum, where the guide explains the 1976 student uprising against Afrikaans-language education: the moment that shaped the township's resistance. From there you walk through Mandela House, the modest corner home on Vilakazi Street where Nelson Mandela lived before his 1963 arrest. Some original furniture remains. The same street holds the Soweto home of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, another Nobel laureate who lived steps away.
After lunch at a local restaurant, the tour drives through Soweto's residential streets, showing the range from formal houses to informal settlements, then continues to Lesedi Cultural Village. There you tour five traditional homesteads representing different South African cultures, then gather for a live traditional dance performance that closes the day. The whole outing runs about five hours from hotel pickup to return.
