The experience

The tour departs at 10:00 AM or 3:00 PM from Johannesburg or Pretoria, with a drive of approximately 1.5 hours to Lesedi Cultural Village in the northwest province. You arrive to a traditional welcome with dancers in African style, then move through the homesteads of each tribe. At each stop, tribal representatives explain their way of living, marriage customs, traditional foods, wedding ceremonies, funeral practices and other cultural aspects specific to that group. The five tribes (Zulu, Basotho, Pedi, Xhosa, and Ndebele) each have distinct traditions, and the tour is built around seeing those differences firsthand rather than hearing about them secondhand.

After the homestead visits, you watch an energetic drumming and dance performance where dancers from the different tribes showcase their skills and passion. This is followed by a traditional African buffet lunch at the Nyama Choma Restaurant on the village grounds. The air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water and WiFi on board are included throughout the day. The tour runs six hours total, and you return to your departure point by late afternoon or evening depending on which time slot you choose.
