The experience
The dive starts on land. You'll change into a wetsuit at the center, grab snacks and water, then head out on a short boat trip to the dive site. Once the boat reaches the grounds, the crew begins to attract sharks: bronze whalers are the most common sighting, though you might also see cape fur seals, stingrays, sunfish, sevengill sharks, or great whites. The cage holds six divers at a time, and the group rotates through so everyone gets water time. No prior diving or snorkeling experience is needed.
What arrives alongside the cage depends on the season and the day. Southern right whales sometimes appear during the boat ride out. The bronze whaler shark, also called the copper shark, is the regular visitor. Less frequent sightings include the species that made Gansbaai known as the Shark Capital of the World. You're in the cage, the sharks are in the water, and the guide is there managing both.
Once back at the dive center, you'll shower in warm water and sit down to a full lunch while looking out at the ocean. The whole experience runs three hours from arrival to the last bite. The operator is fully licensed and permitted, and the team keeps groups small and skilled.
