The Experience

The boat leaves from Gansbaai harbour after a safety briefing at The Great White House, where you'll get coffee, tea and muffins while learning about the area and the conservation work happening there. You'll be fitted with an inflatable life jacket and wet weather gear, then walk down to board the Dream Catcher, a custom-designed vessel. The marine biologist and crew stay with small groups—roughly one crew member per six or seven guests—so questions get answered as you move through the water.

The route takes you past Shark Alley to watch great white sharks, then to Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, where around 60,000 Cape fur seals haul out. Southern Right Whales are most common from June through December; the rest of the year you may spot Humpback or Bryde's whales instead. Three dolphin species visit the area—Common, Humpback and Indo-Pacific Bottlenose—and the waters hold a wide variety of seabirds. The trip runs roughly two to two and a half hours on the water.

When you return to The Great White House, warm soup and bread wait while you warm up by the fire or, in summer, sit in the sun. A crew member will debrief the trip with you, and you can buy footage of what you saw. The African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary visit happens either before or after the boat trip—it's a world-class rehabilitation centre for injured, oiled and abandoned seabirds, with a focus on the endangered African Penguin. If you book the shuttle option, the route stops in Hermanus so you can walk the clifftop viewpoint and browse the craft market before heading back to Cape Town.
