The experience
You arrive at Buffelsdrift and board a game vehicle that carries you directly into the 5-hectare lion enclosure. The elevated viewpoint keeps you at a safe distance while the three lions (born in captivity and unable to be released into the wild) feed under the ranger's supervision. A trained game ranger manages the feeding and stays with your group throughout, answering questions about lion behavior, diet, social structure and survival in the wild. Bring a camera. The elevated platform and the ranger's positioning give you clear sight lines for photographs.
The 90-minute outing is built around the feeding itself, so timing matters: the ranger coordinates the activity to hold the lions' attention and keep the viewing window open. The experience supports conservation work and funding for two local schools in the community. Because the lions were born in captivity at a smaller facility and moved to Buffelsdrift for more space, the enclosure's size and the ranger's knowledge of each animal's temperament shape how the feeding unfolds. Wheelchairs and strollers are accommodated on the vehicle and at the viewpoint, and infants can sit on an adult's lap during transport.
