The experience
Gansbaai sits at the center of Great White shark activity in the Southern Hemisphere. Shark Alley, the narrow channel between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, concentrates the sharks because the islands are home to 50,000 Cape Fur seals. The prey that brings apex predators to hunt. The boat anchors in the channel and the crew begins chumming with tuna and fish to attract sharks to the cage. When a Great White appears, you kit up in your wetsuit and mask, slip into the submerged cage, and wait for the animal to pass close enough that you can see its eye and teeth without a camera lens between you.
Not everyone goes in the cage. Plenty of divers watch from the boat instead, and the operator notes this is often just as good a vantage: sometimes better, because you see the shark's full body and the way it moves through the water. Either way, you're on the water for the duration, and the crew keeps you fed: breakfast before you board, snacks and drinks while you wait for sharks, and a light lunch back at the harbour. You'll also watch a DVD of the day's footage while you eat, so you can see what the cameras caught.
The meeting point is at Kleinbaai Harbour, a short walk from where you start. If you've booked the self-drive option, you make your own way to Gansbaai from Cape Town. If you've added the transfer, a driver collects you from your accommodation and brings you back. The safety briefing happens before breakfast, so you know what to expect before you're anywhere near the water.

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the difference between cage diving and watching from the boat?
Cage diving puts you underwater in a submerged cage when a shark approaches. You see the animal at close range and eye level. Watching from the boat keeps you on deck, where you see the shark's full body and its movement through the water. The operator says both offer excellent views, and many divers choose the boat for their first shark encounter.
How does the crew attract the sharks to the cage?
The boat anchors in Shark Alley and the crew chummed the water with tuna and fish. This draws Great Whites to the area. When one arrives close enough to the cage, you have the chance to descend if you've chosen to dive.
What's included in the price?
Breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks on the boat; wetsuit and diving mask; and the safety briefing are all included. A transfer from Cape Town is optional and costs extra if you add it. The self-drive option means you arrange your own transport to Gansbaai.
