A couple of game drives, a full day in the reserve, one ranger who knows where the Big 5 are

A day tour from Richards Bay into Manyoni Game Reserve, a private reserve where only lodge guests and guided tours can enter, with two separate game drives—a 3-hour morning drive starting at 7am and a 3-hour afternoon drive after lunch—led by a ranger who tracks sightings across the reserve to position you for Big 5 encounters. The reserve's restricted access and the ranger's real-time coordination of wildlife movements are what make the sightings possible on a single day. Binoculars and multilingual field guides are included; lunch is your own arrangement.

Step-by-step itinerary

Big 5 Safari at Manyoni Game Reserve

  • Start safari at 07h00
  • Meet knowledgeable ranger
  • Receive game drive briefing
  • Enjoy 3-hour morning game drive
  • Have lunch
  • Embark on 3-hour afternoon game drive
  • Depart for Richards Bay at 15h30

The Experience

The 7am start is not arbitrary. Predators hunt at dawn, and the ranger knows it—that timing is the whole reason a day tour can deliver Big 5 sightings instead of a long drive with no guarantee. You'll meet your ranger at the reserve entrance for a briefing on game drive etiquette, then climb into an open 4x4 where you can see in all directions. For the next three hours, the ranger tracks movement across the reserve, staying in radio contact with other guides to learn where animals have been spotted. That coordination is what keeps you in the right place when a lion or leopard crosses the road.

Lunch breaks the day in half. After you eat, you head deeper into the reserve for a second 3-hour drive, this time focusing on different areas and different game. By afternoon, predators are resting, but the reserve holds plenty of other wildlife—buffalo, rhino, elephant, leopard, lion—and the ranger adjusts the route to what's moving. You depart for Richards Bay around 3:30pm, arriving back roughly 11 hours after you left.

Manyoni is a Premier Private Game Reserve, which means it's closed to day-trippers and self-driving tourists. Only lodge guests and guided tours get in. That restriction is why the wildlife density works in your favor—fewer vehicles, more predictable animal behavior, and a ranger who knows every waterhole and every recent sighting. Binoculars (Zeiss Terra ED 8x42) and multilingual field guides in English, German and French come with you; water is provided throughout the day.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want a full day in a private reserve where the Big 5 actually live—the early 7am start and the ranger's real-time coordination of sightings across the reserve are what turn a day trip into a realistic chance to see predators, not a long drive hoping to get lucky.

Top questions

What time does the safari start and why does that matter for seeing the Big 5?

The tour departs Richards Bay at 7am and enters the reserve for a 3-hour morning drive, timed to catch predators like lions and leopards during their most active hunting hours at dawn. That early start is what makes Big 5 sightings realistic on a single day tour.

How does the ranger know where to find the Big 5 if they're moving around the reserve?

The ranger stays in radio contact with other guides throughout the day, tracking real-time sightings across Manyoni and adjusting the route to position you where animals have been spotted. That coordination replaces the luck factor with strategy.

Can I drive myself into Manyoni Game Reserve, or does it have to be a guided tour?

Manyoni is a Premier Private Game Reserve that only permits guests staying at its luxury lodges or visitors on guided tours. Self-driving is not an option, which is why the reserve maintains the wildlife density that makes Big 5 encounters possible.

What's included in the tour and what do I need to arrange myself?

The tour includes pickup from Richards Bay, both game drives, a knowledgeable ranger, binoculars, multilingual field guides, and bottled water throughout the day. Lunch is not included, so you'll need to bring food or arrange a meal during the midday break.

How long is the total day, and what happens between the two game drives?

The full tour runs 11 hours from Richards Bay departure to return. After the 3-hour morning drive, you break for lunch (roughly 12pm to 1:30pm), then head out again for the 3-hour afternoon drive before departing the reserve around 3:30pm.
