The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel and a drive through Midrand and Centurion into Pretoria, where you pass the Voortrekker Monument, University of Pretoria, Paul Kruger House, Church Square and the Union Building. The guide points out how Centurion was renamed after 1994, marking the shift in the country's history. From there you head into Johannesburg's Houghton district, the city's most expensive residential area, and stop at Mandela House before climbing to Munro Drive, the highest point in Johannesburg.
The route then moves through Hillbrow, past Constitutional Hill and the Mandela Bridge, before reaching Soweto. You visit Diepkloof Extension, the upmarket section of the township, then drive past the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and Orlando Towers to Soccer City Stadium, where the 2010 World Cup opening and closing ceremonies took place. Vilakazi Street is the centerpiece: the only street in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, lived in the same neighborhood. You also see the Hector Peterson Memorial and Winnie Mandela's house. Lunch is available but not included.
The final stop is the Apartheid Museum, which you explore on your own. The exhibits walk through South Africa's complex history during the apartheid era and the country's journey to democracy. The whole day runs nine hours, with an air-conditioned vehicle and bottled water provided throughout.
