The experience

Pilanesberg National Park sits just over 200km from Johannesburg, roughly two hours' drive, making it reachable for a full day trip if you start early. The park lies within the Pilanesberg Alkaline Ring Complex, a series of concentric hills that are what remains of a volcano that died millions of years ago. That geology shapes what lives there: the park holds both arid savanna species like springbok and red hartebeest, and wetter savanna animals including buffalo, white rhino and waterbuck. Over 300 bird species move between both zones, so the morning and afternoon game drives take you through shifting habitat in a single day.

Your specialist guide leads the route from the entrance gate, choosing scenic and productive roads based on recent sightings and the season. Breakfast happens at a picnic spot early in the morning, and lunch comes either at a prepared spot or at the park restaurant, depending on where the day's game drives take you. The vehicle is air-conditioned, so you stay comfortable during the long stretches between stops. Snacks, tea, coffee and cold beverages come throughout the day. Late afternoon, you head back toward Johannesburg, arriving after a full ten to twelve hours away from the city.

The park is open year-round, so you can visit in summer or winter depending on when your schedule allows. Children from age 5 can join, and infants or small children can travel in a pram or stroller. The minimum booking is two adults.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years); Child (5 to 12 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.

What are the chances of seeing the Big 5 on a Pilanesberg safari?

Pilanesberg is home to all five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo), and a specialist guide with years of experience in the park knows where and when to find them. Sightings are never guaranteed on any single day, but the full-day format and the guide's knowledge give you the best odds a day trip can offer.

How far is Pilanesberg from Johannesburg and how much driving is involved?

The park is just over 200km away and takes roughly two hours to reach from Johannesburg. The day includes morning and afternoon game drives inside the park itself, with breakfast and lunch breaks between them, so you're in the vehicle for most of the ten to twelve hours but not driving continuously.

What makes the Pilanesberg's geology unusual?

The park sits inside the Pilanesberg Alkaline Ring Complex, a series of concentric hills that are the remnants of a long-extinct volcano. That volcanic history shaped the soil and water, which in turn created two different savanna zones (arid and wetter) that exist side by side in the same reserve, bringing together species that normally live far apart.

What's included in the tour price?

Park entrance fees, breakfast at a picnic spot, lunch (either prepared or from the park restaurant), snacks, tea, coffee and cold beverages are all included. Alcoholic beverages are not included. Pickup from Johannesburg is also included.
