Slide across ancient rock faces and fly through a mountain kloof

Magaliesberg Canopy Tour is a zipline activity through Ysterhout Kloof in the Magaliesberg Mountains, where you move between 11 platforms built into the rock faces on 10 slides, some stretching 140 meters and suspended 30 meters above the stream below. A trained guide leads the experience, sharing facts about the 2,400-million-year-old mountain, its ecology and wildlife. The tour takes 2.5 to 3 hours and includes all safety equipment—harness, helmet, glove and pulley—plus transport to the course from the offices.

The Experience

Ysterhout Kloof sits in the heart of the Magaliesberg Mountains, halfway between Hartebeespoort and Rustenburg, about 1½ hours from Johannesburg and Pretoria. The canopy tour is built into the rock faces themselves: 11 platforms anchored high in the kloof, connected by 10 slides that vary in length and angle. The longest stretch 140 meters. You move from platform to platform under your own control, using the pulley system you're fitted with at the start, while the stream runs 30 meters below.

The day begins with a safety briefing at the tour offices, where you're kitted out with a sliding harness, safety helmet, sliding glove and pulley. A trained guide leads you through the course, managing the pace and sharing details about the mountain's geology, the ecology of the kloof, and the bird and animal life you pass through. The whole experience—briefing, gearing up, the slides themselves and the walk back—takes 2.5 to 3 hours. Transport from the offices to the zipline course is included.

The tour accommodates wheelchair users through an innovative sliding chair called Lettie, so mobility does not have to mean sitting it out. The guide speaks English and stays with the group throughout, so you're never managing the equipment alone or figuring out the next move by yourself.

What’s included
