Six hours tracking lions, elephants and leopards across open savanna

A six-hour guided game drive through Kruger National Park with entry via Malelane or Crocodile Bridge Gates, English-speaking guide and hotel pickup included. You travel through the park's main viewing zones (Lower Sabie, Skukuza, Berg en Dal and others) stopping to watch for lions, elephants, leopards, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles and hundreds of bird species. Coffee and tea await you at the gate before departure.

The experience

The drive starts with coffee or tea at the gate, then moves into the park's interior where the guide navigates the open roads looking for wildlife. Kruger's size means sightings depend on the day and the season, but the route covers the zones where lions, elephants and leopards are most often found. You'll pass through Lower Sabie, Skukuza, Berg en Dal, Afsaal and Pretorius Kop: each a known gathering point for different species. The guide stops when animals appear, giving you time to watch and photograph.

The itinerary includes rest stops at these established points, so you're not driving for six straight hours. Hippos and crocodiles show up in the water; giraffes and their calves graze in the open; smaller birds (eagles, vultures, and the smaller, brightly colored species) move through the trees and sky. A tortoise crossing the road is not uncommon. The guide speaks English and knows where to look, but wildlife moves on its own schedule, so what you see shifts with the time of year and the hour of day.

Hotel pickup is included, so you don't arrange transport to the gate. The drive suits all fitness levels since you're seated the whole time. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available if you need them. Public transport options exist nearby if you prefer to meet the guide at the gate instead.

Is this one for you?Choose the time of day that fits your schedule (dawn, dusk or a full-day drive), since the guide accommodates your preference and the wildlife you encounter shifts with the hour. The fixed six-hour window means you see the main viewing zones without committing to a full day in the park.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Infant (under 2): free.

What animals am I most likely to see on a Kruger game drive?

Lions, elephants, leopards, giraffes, hippos and crocodiles are the main draws, and the guide knows the zones where each species gathers. Hundreds of bird species live in the park: vultures, eagles and smaller, colorful birds are visible throughout the day. A tortoise or other smaller wildlife may cross the road, but sightings depend on the season and the time of day you drive.

How does the six-hour drive break up? Is it nonstop driving?

The route includes established rest stops at Lower Sabie, Skukuza, Berg en Dal, Afsaal and Pretorius Kop, so you pause to stretch and take in the landscape. These stops are also where wildlife congregates, so they're viewing opportunities as much as breaks.

Do I need my own transport to get to the park gate?

Hotel pickup is included, so the guide collects you from your accommodation and brings you to either Malelane or Crocodile Bridge Gate. Public transport options are available nearby if you prefer to meet at the gate instead.
