The experience

The tour opens in Johannesburg at Constitution Hill, where the Old Fort Prison once held Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid leaders. You'll walk through the Constitutional Court, a building designed to symbolize the country's shift toward justice and equality. From there, the route moves through Maboneng, a neighborhood of street art and galleries that shows Johannesburg's creative side now, then crosses the Nelson Mandela Bridge for views of the city skyline before arriving at the Apartheid Museum. The museum's exhibits and photographs document the system's rise and fall through the voices and stories of those who lived through it.

The afternoon takes you to Soweto to visit Mandela House, the modest home where Nelson Mandela lived before his arrest. The house is preserved as a museum with his personal belongings and photographs. Lunch follows at Sakhumzi Restaurant on Vilakazi Street, where you'll eat traditional South African food (braai, pap, chakalaka) in the same neighborhood where Mandela walked. The FNB Stadium, shaped like a calabash and famous for hosting the 2010 World Cup final, rounds out the day.

Day 2 shifts to Pretoria's government and heritage sites. The Union Buildings sit on a hill overlooking the city and are where Mandela took his oath as president in 1994. The Voortrekker Monument, a granite structure in a nature reserve, honors the 19th-century pioneers who traveled inland. Its interior holds murals of key historical moments. Church Square in the city center is ringed by colonial architecture and the statue of Paul Kruger. Your guide provides context at each stop, connecting the physical sites to the people and events that shaped the country.
