The experience

The day starts at your hotel with pickup and a guide's overview of what you'll see. From there you drive through Houghton Estate to see the house where Nelson Mandela lived during his presidency until his death in 2013, then past Munro Drive: a scenic overlook built by Italian prisoners of war during World War II that looks out over Johannesburg's northern suburbs and the world's largest man-made subtropical forest. The route gives you the geography before you enter the township itself.

Soweto unfolds in stages. You pass the FNB Stadium, Africa's largest football stadium and host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup final, then move into Diepkloof Extension, the upmarket residential section where professionals own large owner-built houses. The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (the world's third-largest, occupying 173 acres with 3,200 beds) comes into view as the guide explains its role in the township's story. The two cooling towers, now an entertainment center with a bungee jump and restaurant, sit 100 meters tall and offer panoramic views of the township.
