The Experience

Hands pressed to the window, I caught my breath as the first lion padded past — not just any lion but one of those pale white ones you always hear about but never expect to see this close. Our guide, Thabo, grinned when he saw my face. “They’re even lazier in winter,” he joked, nodding at their slow stretch in the morning sun. The air smelled faintly of dust and something sweet I couldn’t quite place — maybe those yellow flowers by the fence? I kept trying to snap photos but honestly, sometimes you just want to watch.

We rolled through the Lion Park’s different enclosures in an air-conditioned van (thank goodness — it was warmer than I thought), and Thabo pointed out every animal like he knew them personally. There were brown lions too, lounging together with that heavy stillness big cats have. Then suddenly we were staring at cheetahs—one flicked its tail and stared right back at me. Wild dogs trotted along the fence line, ears twitching; they looked almost playful until you noticed how sharp their eyes were.

I didn’t expect giraffes to be so curious. One leaned its whole neck down toward us as if it wanted a closer look at our group—someone laughed nervously and dropped their water bottle (it rolled under my seat). We also spotted zebras grazing near some antelopes off in the distance. There was something calming about watching all these animals together, even with the occasional rumble from another tour bus nearby. The whole thing felt less like a show and more like catching glimpses of real lives unfolding on their own time.

I still think about that white lion’s eyes—how calm they seemed, even with all of us watching. If you’re anywhere near Johannesburg and have half a day free, this is one of those things you remember longer than you expect. Bring your camera but don’t forget to just look up sometimes.
