Cradle of Humankind tour: Sterkfontein Caves and Maropeng
A morning tracing humanity back through deep time underground
A five-hour guided tour of the UNESCO-listed Cradle of Humankind combines the interactive Maropeng Visitor Centre—where you ride through a simulated cave and handle stone tools—with a descent into Sterkfontein Caves, where an expert guide leads you past the limestone chambers that yielded Mrs. Ples and Little Foot. Hotel pickup and all transport are included; the guide speaks English and walks you through the paleoanthropological significance of each site.
Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Cradle of Humankind
- Visit Maropeng Visitor Centre
- Take underground boat ride
- Explore interactive exhibitions
- Craft stone tools and watch films
- Tour Sterkfontein Caves with guide
- Wear hardhat and explore caves
- View fossil replicas exhibition
- Optional lunch at Tumulus restaurant
The Experience
The tour begins at Maropeng Visitor Centre, built into the Magaliesberg foothills in the shape of a grassy mound. You start with an underground boat ride through an artificial cave that simulates Earth's formation, then move into the 2,500 square-meter exhibition space where displays trace human evolution through fossils, early tools, and reconstructions of hominids like Australopithecus africanus. Hands-on activities let you craft stone tools yourself, and short films detail the major fossil discoveries—including how Mrs. Ples, a 2.5-million-year-old skull, and Little Foot, at 3.67 million years old, were found and what they tell us about our ancestors. The centre's modern design frames views of the surrounding landscape, and you can opt for lunch at the on-site Tumulus restaurant before moving on.
From there, you travel to Sterkfontein Caves, one of the world's most significant paleoanthropological sites. Equipped with a provided hardhat, you follow your expert guide through a network of underground limestone chambers, descending stairs and navigating narrow passages lined with stalactites and stalagmites. The guide explains how these caves became a window into human origins, the role of ongoing research by Wits University scientists, and why the fossils found here matter to understanding where we come from. A small exhibition on-site displays fossil replicas and the science behind the discoveries. The entire experience is conducted in an air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver, and bottled water is provided throughout.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to see the actual caves where iconic fossils were found and have an expert explain their significance in person. The combination of the interactive museum and the underground walk through Sterkfontein means you understand the science before you stand in the chambers where the discoveries happened, rather than reading about them afterward.

What exactly is Mrs. Ples, and why is it so important to understanding human evolution?
Mrs. Ples is a 2.5-million-year-old skull of Australopithecus africanus discovered in Sterkfontein Caves. It is one of the most complete skulls of this early hominid species and provides crucial evidence about the anatomy and development of our ancestors millions of years before modern humans appeared.
Do I walk through the actual caves where the fossils were found, or is it a museum display?
You walk through the actual Sterkfontein Caves themselves, descending into the limestone chambers where Mrs. Ples, Little Foot, and other fossils were discovered. Your guide explains the geological and archaeological significance of each section as you move through the underground passages.
What is the underground boat ride at Maropeng, and how long does it last?
The boat ride at Maropeng is a short simulated journey through an artificial cave that depicts Earth's formation from its fiery origins to the dawn of life. It sets the stage for the exhibition and takes only a few minutes, introducing the themes of geological and human history you explore in the interactive displays that follow.
Is the tour physically demanding, and are there stairs or steep sections?
The Sterkfontein Caves portion involves navigating stairs and narrow passages, so a moderate level of physical fitness is recommended. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnant travelers due to the underground terrain and physical demands.
Does the five-hour duration include time for lunch?
The five-hour tour covers transport, both attractions, and the guided experiences at each site. Lunch is optional and available for purchase at Maropeng's Tumulus restaurant or a nearby café; if you choose to eat, you can arrange that timing with your guide during the tour.
