The experience
The tour starts with a scenic drive toward the Valley of a Thousand Hills, where you'll stop at Phezulu's crocodile farm to see one of the largest crocodiles in KwaZulu-Natal and a full range of indigenous snakes. Then comes the tribal dancing display at Phezulu itself: pounding drums, traditional performance, and a chance to learn about Zulu customs and history directly from your guide.
The second half takes you to Isithumba Village, about 45 minutes outside Durban. This is not a staged attraction but a real place where people live their daily lives. You've been invited to experience a piece of it. The 90-minute walking tour is light activity, and you'll meet the actual Chief or Headman of the village, as well as the Sangoma, a traditional healer. The guide will take you down to the river, a site of profound cultural importance to the Zulu people: historically the place where young men met the women they would marry.
An air-conditioned vehicle carries you between sites, and bottled water is provided throughout the day. The full experience runs about eight hours from pickup to return.
