Step-by-step itinerary
Zulu culture and game reserve visit
- Guided tour of Zulu village
- Watch Zulu dancing and singing
- Closed vehicle game drive in Hluhluwe Imfolozi
The experience
The day starts with a guided tour of DumaZulu Cultural Village, where you watch Zulu dancing and singing performances and learn about Zulu traditions and life before the modern era. From there, the route heads inland, a 2 to 3 hour drive, to Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve in the heart of Zululand. The reserve's northern section, Hluhluwe, is known for its wide variety of bird and animal life, while the southern Imfolozi section offers equally diverse wildlife across hilly terrain.
The game drive itself happens in a closed vehicle, which means you stay comfortable while scanning the savanna for the Big 5: lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhinoceros. The reserve's 98,000 hectares hold far more than these five (the animal and bird list is long and varied), but the Big 5 are what most travelers come to see. The park's Centenary Capture Centre sets standards for animal capture and sustainable use across Africa, and the reserve has become world-renowned specifically for its white rhino conservation work.
Pickup and drop-off happen within a 5km radius of Durban, with the day starting at 6:00 AM and returning by 8:30 PM. A qualified guide leads both the cultural village portion and the game drive. Bring comfortable clothing, shoes, a hat and sunscreen. A jacket is useful for the early morning and evening. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available. Wheelchair users should inform the operator of their chair's weight and size when booking.
