  • Explore Windybrow Theater and Art Center
  • Enjoy hearty dinner with local wine

The experience

Hillbrow's story is one of radical change. Laid out as a residential suburb in 1894 and 1895, it remained a planned white neighborhood until after World War Two, when developers began converting the stands into apartment blocks. That shift opened the floodgates: the discovery of gold in Johannesburg drew people from across the world, and Hillbrow welcomed them all. The neighborhood became a cosmopolitan hub almost overnight, defying the racial segregation laws that governed the rest of the city. Today it remains one of Johannesburg's most densely mixed areas, and the walking route covers less than 3 kilometers to take in two of the city's iconic towers and the architectural layers of that transformation.

The tour moves through the neighborhood on foot with a guide who speaks English, stopping at a 120-year-old Victorian house and the Windybrow Theater and Art Center. After the walking portion, you sit down to a hearty lunch paired with local wine. Bottled water is provided throughout the three hours. The minimum age is 21.

You can book the core Hillbrow Walking Tour or add Ponte Tower to the itinerary. Both follow the same route through the neighborhood and include the same lunch. Public transportation options are available nearby if you need them to reach the meeting point.
