The Experience

The tour departs Cape Town at 6:45am from the meeting point, or earlier from your hotel if booked two or more days in advance. The first leg follows Route 62, one of South Africa's most dramatic roads, cutting through the semi-desert Klein Karoo toward Oudtshoorn over roughly six hours. The day ends with a tour of Cango Caves, where you walk subterranean pathways past towering stalactite and stalagmite formations, then settle into your overnight accommodation.

Day two covers about 350 kilometres and layers several experiences. An optional elephant observation at Buffelsdrift Private Game Reserve lets you follow hand-reared elephants in their natural bushvelt habitat (paid separately on tour). The route then resumes along Route 62 to the Wilderness area, where you paddle a canoe along a calm river lined with indigenous forest—no training needed, and the birdlife becomes apparent once you stop paddling and let the current carry you. The afternoon brings a scenic coastal drive past Knysna and Plettenberg Bay to Bloukrans Bridge, standing 216 metres above the river. An optional bungee jump and zipline are available here; if jumping is not for you, a forest walk offers an alternative. You finish the day in Sedgefield or Wilderness, with time to swim in the Indian Ocean or walk the white sand beach.

The final day starts with a two-hour 4x4 game drive in Botlierskop Game Reserve, where a ranger uses local knowledge to track African elephants, Cape buffalo, lions, rhinos, giraffes, antelopes, zebras and wildebeest across coastal renosterveldt and Cape fynbos. After lunch, the minivan heads back to Cape Town, arriving by early evening. The itinerary can run in reverse or a different order depending on seasonal and operational availability. Breakfast is included each morning at your accommodation; lunch is en-route with limited options, and dinner is at your leisure in local restaurants or your accommodation's kitchen.
