The Experience

Ever wondered what it feels like to wake up somewhere completely different every morning? That first day on the Garden Route & Addo Safari tour from Cape Town, I was still half-asleep when our guide knocked — I’d barely packed my sunhat. The road out of the city is long but it doesn’t drag; we stopped for wine tasting along Route 62 (I couldn’t pronounce half the grape names) and watched the scenery shift from vineyards to rocky hills. Oudtshoorn felt like a town out of time — ostrich feathers everywhere, even on people’s hats at dinner. I tried “pot brood” by the fire that night. It tasted smoky and soft inside, like bread that remembers the earth.

The next morning was all about caves — Cango Caves are colder than you’d expect, echoey with drips and our group’s nervous laughter. Our guide told stories about Khoikhoi paintings while we squeezed through limestone tunnels. Lunch was in some little padstal café where I finally learned what “bobotie” is (sort of sweet-spicy meat pie). If you’re into food, this part of South Africa is basically a rolling buffet. By late afternoon we were in Addo, and I could smell citrus groves before I even saw them. The air gets heavier there, almost sticky.

I didn’t sleep much before safari day — nerves or excitement? Maybe both. Addo Elephant Park at sunrise is quiet except for birds and the low rumble of our van. We spotted elephants crossing right in front of us (one calf just stared back at me — honestly felt rude looking away). Our guide knew every animal call; he could tell when lions were close just by how the guinea fowl acted. Later in Jeffreys Bay some people surfed but I just lay on the sand listening to waves thump against the shore while someone tried to teach me “lekker” means cool.

Tsitsikamma forests are green in a way my camera couldn’t catch — mossy and damp underfoot, with birds darting overhead while we crossed those suspension bridges. A few braver souls did the Bloukrans Bridge bungy jump (216 meters!) but I chickened out after watching one guy’s legs shake for ten minutes straight. Knysna Heads at sunset looked unreal — pink light on water, everyone got quiet for a minute without meaning to. Last night in Sedgefield we ate barefoot at a beach shack; sand everywhere but nobody cared.

The drive back to Cape Town felt slower somehow — maybe because none of us wanted it to end yet. There’s something about sharing early mornings and weird snacks with strangers that makes you feel oddly at home. Even now I keep thinking about that elephant calf’s eyes.
