The experience
I still remember how the air tasted salty and cold when we stepped off the shuttle from Hermanus at the Great White House. There was this nervous energy in the room: maybe it was just me, but everyone seemed to be glancing around, half-awake, clutching their coffee mugs. Our guide (I think her name was Minke?) handed out muffins and joked about “seasickness being character-building.” I tried to laugh but honestly, I was already picturing myself clinging to the rail. Afterwards, back at the Great White House, they served us hot soup with bread: honestly, nothing has ever tasted as good as that did after two hours in sea spray. My hands were still shaking a little from excitement (and maybe cold). We got a quiet moment to watch some trip footage on a screen inside. I looked ridiculous in my wet weather gear but also kind of proud. Before heading out again we visited the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary nearby, it’s more moving than I expected seeing those rescued birds up close. One volunteer explained how fragile their population is now. It stuck with me all the way back through Hermanus.
