The experience
You pick one of two experiences before you book. Freshwater river fishing takes you to the Cape Streams (clear water running through the Worcester and Paarl mountains), where you'll sight-fish for rainbow and brown trout using light tackle and predominantly dry fly. The saltwater option puts you after large predatory Leery and Garrick fish in an estuary near Cape Town, either from a small boat or wading in with gear. Both are fly fishing, but the setup, the water and the fish are entirely different.
The guide provides rod, tackle and flies. You bring moderate fitness and the willingness to stand in a river or shallow estuary for hours. Light lunch and locally sourced river snacks keep you fueled through the five hours. When you land a fish, the guide documents it with pictures and videos before you release it back into the water: the operator calls this a humbling experience, and the catch itself is the point, not the takeaway.
Public transportation options are available nearby if you're not arranging your own transport. Children from age five are welcome, though the activity is not recommended for pregnant travelers or anyone with poor cardiovascular health. The guide speaks English and leads the day. Pickup is included in at least one booking option.

Is this one for you?Choose freshwater if you want to wade and sight-fish in mountain streams. Choose saltwater if you'd rather fish from a boat or in an estuary for larger predatory fish. Either way, the five-hour format fits a half-day outing and the guide handles the technical setup, so you focus on the cast and the moment the fish takes.
