The experience
The day starts with a drive to PheZulu Cultural Village in the Valley of a Thousand Hills. There you watch a live Zulu Cultural Show and walk through a traditional Zulu village with your guide. The same site houses the PheZulu Reptile Park, where a guided tour takes you past crocodiles and snakes on display. After that, you drive back into Durban for the city portion of the tour.
The Durban landmarks come in sequence: Durban City Hall, a neo-baroque building from 1910; the Botanic Gardens, Africa's oldest, planted in 1849 and holding rare trees and flowers; Victoria Street Market, where vendors sell African clothing, art, jewelry and spices; and a guided walk through the Zulu Herb Market, where traditional medicine is still sold and used. The KwaMuhle Museum, housed in a former Native Administration Office, documents apartheid in Durban and includes an educational HIV/AIDS exhibition. A brief stop at Moses Mabhida Stadium rounds out the route, with an optional Sky Car ride to the platform available at extra cost. You have time built in for shopping or lunch.
Your guide speaks English as standard. Portuguese, French, and Greek are available on request. The tour runs in all weather, so bring appropriate clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Hotel and cruise ship pickup is included. The tour lasts around eight hours total.
