The experience

The tour starts with hotel pickup in Phuket and moves through three temples and a waterfall before reaching the lake. Wat Suwan Kuha, a cave temple carved into the hillside, holds a reclining Buddha, stalactites, bats and monkeys. You walk through it on the way to a waterfall where you can swim if you want. After a stop at the temple of King Rama X, a longtail boat carries you across Cheow Lan Lake to your cabin, passing the limestone cliffs that give the lake its Guilin-like shape. The national park entrance fee is already paid.

Your cabin sits on the lakeside with air conditioning, a shower and a toilet. Electricity runs from evening until morning. Dinner is served at a lake restaurant, and the evening ends with a boat safari on the water at sunset, when the cliffs catch the last light. Day two begins with breakfast, then a bamboo raft ride down the Khlong Sok river (you get a cup of tea or coffee as a gift) before heading to the Samet Nang She viewpoint for a panoramic view over Phang Nga Bay. The route back includes a stop at a traditional Thai herbal medicine shop.

An English-speaking guide travels with the group throughout, and meals are handled at the lake restaurants so you don't arrange food separately.
