The Experience

I’ll be honest — I was nervous before our township tour from Cape Town. Not scared exactly, just unsure what to expect. But the moment we met our guide outside the hotel (he greeted us by name, which felt oddly comforting), that faded. He told us stories about growing up nearby as we drove toward Langa — you could hear pride in his voice, but also this gentle honesty about the past. The city faded behind us and suddenly the colors changed; bright walls, laundry flapping in the wind, kids darting between houses. I remember the smell of wood smoke mixing with something sweet from a bakery cart — it’s funny how those little things stick.

Walking through Langa wasn’t like any “tour” I’d done before. People waved or nodded — some curious, some just busy with their day. Our guide introduced us to a sangoma (traditional healer). She had this calm presence; her room was filled with dried herbs and beads that clinked softly when she moved. I tried to say thank you in Xhosa (I definitely butchered it), and she laughed kindly. We stopped at an arts center where young artists were painting murals right on the walls — one of them let me try a brushstroke, though I’m not sure my contribution helped much.

The District Six Museum hit differently than I expected. It’s not fancy or polished — more like a living memory box. Old street signs, family photos pinned up, handwritten notes everywhere. Our guide pointed out his uncle in one of the photos and got quiet for a second; I didn’t ask more but it made everything feel realer somehow. Later we drove through Gugulethu — quick glimpses of daily life: women selling fruit at corners, music thumping from somewhere unseen, sunlight bouncing off tin roofs.

Lunch was at a shebeen (tavern) in Langa — smoky grilled meat and pap on tin plates, people laughing over bottles of beer. It wasn’t staged or awkward; just regulars doing their thing while we tried to blend in (not very successfully). I still think about that feeling of being welcomed into someone else’s ordinary day.
