experience

What’s the experience like?

“Keep an eye out for dolphins!” our guide called as we pushed off from the V&A Waterfront. The city buzz faded behind us, replaced by the gentle slap of paddles and the salty tang of ocean spray. I remember glancing up to see Table Mountain looming over the water, its flat top catching the early sun while Lion’s Head peeked out just beyond. Even though I’d never kayaked before, the sit-on-top kayaks felt steady—no wobbly moments or nerves needed.

We drifted along at a relaxed pace, sometimes just floating and watching cormorants dive after fish. At one point, a seal popped up so close I could hear it snort before it slipped under again. Our guide shared stories about Signal Hill and pointed out how the clouds sometimes roll over Table Mountain like a slow wave—locals call it the “tablecloth.” The air tasted fresh, almost sweet compared to the city streets.

No one rushed us to paddle hard or reach some far-off spot. A few people jumped in for a swim (the water was brisk but not shocking), and getting back into the kayak was easier than I expected with a little help from our guide. The whole outing felt friendly and low-key—just soaking up Cape Town’s wild side with good company and plenty of space to take it all in.
