The Experience

“You’ll never guess what’s around this bend,” our guide Musa grinned as we hugged the curves of Chapman’s Peak Drive, sea mist curling over the cliffs. I was still brushing croissant flakes off my lap from breakfast when we pulled into Hout Bay — seals barking somewhere out on the rocks, fishermen hauling buckets past us. The air smelled like salt and kelp and something frying nearby. At Cape Point, wind whipped so hard I had to laugh just to stay upright. We watched a troop of baboons eye someone’s backpack (not mine for once), then Musa pointed out tiny wildflowers pushing up through the sand. I didn’t expect to feel so small standing at the edge of Africa.

The next morning started in Cape Town city center — Castle of Good Hope looking stern under a pale sky. Our group shuffled along Dorp Street in Stellenbosch later that day, dodging puddles from last night’s rain. The Table Mountain cable car spun us slowly above everything; my ears popped and a kid behind me squealed when we saw the city drop away below. Up top it was quiet except for some birds, and I caught myself just staring at the clouds moving over Lion’s Head. It’s weird how you can be surrounded by people but feel completely alone with a view like that.

I’m not really a wine person (I always say that, then end up loving it), but tasting in Paarl surprised me — there was this peppery red that made everyone pause mid-sip. Lunch in Franschhoek was loud and warm; our server told us about her family coming from French settlers way back, which somehow made every bite taste more interesting. By the time we hit our last vineyard in Stellenbosch, I’d stopped trying to pronounce everything right and just enjoyed the sun filtering through old oak trees. The drive back felt slower, or maybe it was just me wanting it not to end yet.
