The Experience

Did I ever think my kids would actually cheer for cold water? Not really. But there we were, somewhere outside Bovec, squinting at the Soca River’s wild green color (it’s almost unreal), pulling on wetsuits that felt way too tight at first. Our guide—Matjaž, who grew up here—handed us paddles and grinned like he’d seen this all before. He told us the river was “playful today.” I didn’t know rivers could be playful, but it fit.

The first stretch of our family rafting tour was gentle enough for my youngest to ask if fish could see us above the water. You could hear birds over the sound of the current. Matjaž pointed out a little gravel beach where locals swim in summer—he said the water’s always cold, but you get used to it. We stopped there for some games (my daughter tried to stand on the raft and immediately fell in; everyone laughed, including her). The air smelled sharp and clean, like pine mixed with something colder.

I kept glancing up at those Alps—just huge and silent—and realized I’d stopped worrying about anything else. The last bit had more splashes, but nothing scary. My son kept shouting “again!” whenever we hit a wave. We ended up soaked and hungry, but weirdly happy. And yeah, I still think about that green water sometimes when it’s too quiet at home.
