The experience
The tour starts before dawn in Bled and climbs toward Vršič Pass, the highest mountain pass in the eastern Julian Alps. The road itself is a relic: Russian prisoners of war built it during World War I, and a Russian Chapel stands at the summit as a memorial. Just before the pass lies Jasna Lake, ringed by walking paths and ringed by water so clear and green it looks unreal. A statue of Zlatorog, a legendary mountain goat, marks the shore and gives you a photo stop.
The heart of the day is the Soča River itself. You walk 15 minutes on a maintained trail (partly secured with pitons and steel cables) to reach the river's source, a karst spring that feeds the emerald water the tour is named for. From there, the route moves to Boka, a 106-meter waterfall that ranks among Europe's most powerful. Add the 33-meter cascade below it and the total drop reaches 139 meters. Kozjak waterfall comes next, carved into a dark chamber whose ceiling collapsed long ago, leaving a pool of blue-green water you can see up close after crossing Napoleon's Bridge, a stone arch built around 1812 over the Nadiža canyon.
The final stop is Bohinj Lake, Slovenia's largest natural lake, set in the Julian Alps at 526 meters above sea level. The minivan returns you to Bled by 7 or 8 p.m. If you want more than hiking and sightseeing, you can add skydiving or ziplining at the time of booking. These activities are optional and priced separately.
