The Experience

“You’ll want to hold on!” was the last thing our guide Luka shouted before we hit the first set of rapids on the Soca River. I’d thought I was ready—helmet tight, paddle in hand, sun bouncing off that unreal green water—but nothing really prepares you for how cold it feels when it splashes up your sleeve. The air smelled like pine and river stones, and honestly, my heart was racing way before we even started paddling. Luka kept us laughing with stories about growing up in Bovec—he swears he learned to swim before he could walk. Maybe he did.

The 8 kilometers went by faster than I expected. Some stretches were calm enough that we could just float and stare at the mountains (I caught myself zoning out more than once), but then out of nowhere, another rapid would send us all scrambling to stay upright. There was this one spot where a heron took off right as we passed—its wings made this heavy whoosh sound over the water. My friend tried to shout something about “emerald” being too fancy a word for this color, but I couldn’t hear him over everyone’s yelling.
