The Experience

Your day starts with pickup in central Ljubljana. On the roughly 1-hour drive, your guide introduces the Karst—the limestone region that gave its name to karst landscapes worldwide—and what you're about to walk through. The Škocjan Caves themselves take 2 hours. You walk an underground canyon carved by the Reka river, cross a footbridge set almost 50 metres above the water, and move through halls large enough to hold a cathedral. The caves are UNESCO-listed and far quieter than Slovenia's busier show caves, which is exactly why this route chose them.

On the way to the coast, you stop at Socerb Castle, perched on the edge of the Karst plateau. From there the whole Gulf of Trieste opens below you—the Slovenian coast and Italy in a single view. Then comes Piran, five centuries of Venice compressed into one compact old town: narrow lanes, Tartini Square, the little harbour. Your guide walks you through the historic centre, then the time is yours. A seafood lunch by the water, a coffee on the square, and in the summer months a swim in the Adriatic. Your guide knows which konoba is worth your hour.
