The Experience

You start at Spica, a modern café on the Gruber embankment, where your certified SUP instructor meets the group. The boards are Red Paddle Co. models—stable, safe and designed for beginners. After a quick introduction to stance, paddle technique and water safety, you push off into Ljubljana's river and paddle directly into the city center, passing under the Dragon Bridge with its ornamental dragon statues and the Triple Bridge, which has connected Ljubljana's districts since 1842. Ljubljana Castle rises on the hill above, standing there for about 900 years. You're seeing the landmarks most visitors photograph from the embankment, but from the water instead.

The 2-hour paddle mixes instruction with games and downtime. Your guide keeps the pace relaxed, stopping to point out the architecture of Ljubljana's Old Town—much of it shaped by the world-famous architect Jože Plečnik—and answering questions about the city. If the water is calm, you might try SUP games; if you'd rather float and take in the view, that works too. The guide takes photos throughout, so you leave with memories beyond what your phone captures. A wetsuit is provided in spring and autumn if you ask for one.

The tour runs in several time slots across the seasons—morning, afternoon and sunset options—so you can fit it around the rest of your Ljubljana days. Weather is the only hard stop: if rain or wind makes conditions unsafe, the operator cancels and offers either a full refund or a rebooking on another date. Bring sunscreen, water and clothes you don't mind getting wet; the river is the point, not staying dry.
