The experience

You start at the Bovec base with coffee and introductions, then ride south through the historical towns of Kobarid and Tolmin to reach Lake Most na Soči: about 40 minutes by air-conditioned vehicle. Once there, your guide walks you through the paddleboard, paddle and safety equipment, then teaches you the basics: you begin kneeling on the board in the shallow water, practicing strokes until you're ready to stand. There's no rush. The guide keeps the pace easy and everyone progresses at their own speed.

Once you're standing comfortably, you paddle out onto the lake and then into the river canyons where the walls rise up to 15 meters on either side. The narrow passages create a secluded, intimate setting far from crowds. Partway through, you beach the board on a quiet stretch, climb out and rest while you eat fruit and potato chips. Some groups also jump from the rocks into the clear water if conditions allow. After the break, you paddle back downstream and return to Bovec, finishing with enough time to dry off and reflect on what you've learned.

By the end of the four and a half hours, you'll have moved from beginner to someone who can paddle like a professional, and you'll have a story about the Soča canyons to take home.
