Watch trades that are vanishing, not performing for cameras

A 3-hour guided walking tour of Singapore's Chinatown and Tai Seng that takes you past souvenir stalls into working streets where craftsmen still hand-press cuttlefish, hand-blend medicated oils, and shape bread without machines. You taste sachima and kopi at the stalls where locals buy them, visit a joss shop and apothecary serving the same families for generations, and hear directly from the people keeping these trades alive before they disappear. The tour runs in English or Cantonese with a live guide. Children from age 5 are welcome.

Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Singapore's traditional craftsmen

  • Visit sachima and cuttlefish stalls
  • Enter joss and Chinese medicine shops
  • Learn traditional bread making

The experience

Kreta Ayer's working streets are where this tour starts, not the postcard version of Chinatown, but the neighbourhood where people actually live and shop. Inside Chinatown Complex, you meet one of Singapore's last hand-press cuttlefish stalls, grilled over charcoal, and taste fresh sachima, a fried-dough pastry bound in malt syrup. At a coffee stall, you drink sock-brewed Nanyang kopi the way regulars do. These are not demonstrations staged for visitors. The vendors are there because they work there.

The tour then takes you to a joss shop on Banda Street that has served the neighbourhood's temples for generations, and a Chinese medicine shophouse that has been hand-blending medicated oils since the early 1900s. Families in Chinatown still trust it for those oils. A chartered bus then carries the group to Tai Seng, where a bakery shapes and bakes bread by hand: no conveyor belts, no mixers, just flour, water, and decades of practice. You taste the bread and watch how it is made.

The walk covers three hours total and suits all fitness levels. Your guide speaks English or Cantonese and shares the stories of the people keeping these trades alive. The tour ends with the understanding that these are not heritage exhibits. They are working businesses that may not survive another decade.

What exactly do I taste on this Chinatown walking tour?

You taste fresh sachima, a hand-made fried-dough pastry bound in malt syrup; grilled cuttlefish from one of Singapore's last hand-press stalls; sock-brewed Nanyang kopi at a traditional coffee stall; and bread baked by hand at the Tai Seng bakery. The tastings are part of the walk itself. You eat where locals eat.

Is this tour actually inside working shops, or are these set up for visitors?

These are working businesses serving the neighbourhood, not tourist attractions. The cuttlefish vendor, the joss shop, the apothecary, and the bakery operate the same way they did decades ago, and they are there because people in the area still buy from them. You step into their daily work, not a staged experience.

How do I get to Tai Seng, and is the bus ride included?

A chartered bus takes the group from Chinatown to Tai Seng as part of the tour. The bus is included in the booking, so you do not arrange separate transport for that leg.
