The experience

You start from your Dakar lodging at 9am and spend five hours on the road to Saint Louis, arriving with time to check into your hotel and explore the city center on foot. The guide meets you at pickup and stays with you through all three days, speaking English, Spanish or French depending on your preference. Saint Louis sits at the mouth of the Senegal River, and the first evening is yours to wander. The city center is safe to walk at any hour.

Day two opens with a two-hour horse carriage tour through Saint Louis's colonial streets and historical buildings, stopping at the fisherman's village and local market before lunch. After eating, you drive ninety minutes inland to Lompoul Desert and check into an ecolodge. From 5pm onward you ride a camel across the dunes, watch the sunset, and spend the evening around drumming and dinner under the desert sky.

The final morning you leave the desert, drive two hours to Touba's great mosque, and spend an hour inside, photography is permitted. Then it's a two-hour drive back to Dakar, where the tour ends. The operator can arrange drop-off at the airport, Mbour or Saly if those suit your onward plans better than central Dakar.
