The experience

Eight hours gives you room to actually stand in the ruins of Urquhart Castle instead of photographing it from a coach window. The 13th-century fortress sits on a peninsula jutting into Loch Ness, and entrance is included, so you walk the grounds and take in the sweep of the loch without a separate ticket line. Your guide is local and speaks English, and the group stays small enough that you're not herding through the site with thirty others.

From the castle you move south to Fort Augustus, a village at the loch's southern tip where the Caledonian Canal locks let boats pass through. You have time to stroll the streets, watch the water traffic, and choose a café for lunch: the tour builds in a break but doesn't include the meal, so you pick where and what you eat. The Falls of Foyers comes next, a short walk to a waterfall that drops into the loch (weather permitting), and then the tour heads to Dores on the northern shore. Dores is small and quiet. The beach is pebble, the views are long across the water, and if you're lucky the Monster Hunter who lives there will be around. The Dores Inn sits at the water's edge if you want a whisky before the drive back to port.
