The experience

Hands wrapped around a takeaway coffee (the kind that tastes better when you’re half awake), I watched our driver, Stuart, wave us onto the minibus outside Edinburgh. He had that easy Scottish humor, dry but kind. The first hour was mostly chatter about where we’d come from and sheep jokes, so many sheep jokes. But as we rolled into Loch Lomond & the Trossachs, something shifted. Mist on the water, a cold edge in the air. Stuart pointed out tiny islands and told us about clans who used to hide there. I still remember how quiet it got for a minute. Just tires humming and birds somewhere out in the fog.

Somewhere after Glencoe (those steep green walls really do look unreal), we stopped at a turf house replica near the visitor center for lunch. The smell inside (peat smoke and something earthy) clung to my jacket for hours. I didn’t expect to feel so much standing by a waterfall nearby. Maybe it was just being far from everything familiar. Later, walking out toward the Glenfinnan Viaduct (yes, the Harry Potter bridge), someone in our group tried to whistle the movie theme but gave up laughing halfway. Kids waved from the path below as the train crossed. It felt like everyone was part of some quiet secret.

The Isle of Skye itself is wild in a way that’s hard to explain until you’re there. We wandered through Fairy Glen (I tripped over a rock trying to take photos, typical) and climbed up near the Old Man of Storr with wind pushing hard against us. Portree was all pastel houses and seagulls fighting over chips. I bought a postcard I’ll probably never send. Our guide told stories about clan battles at Dunvegan Castle that made history feel less like dates in a book and more like something alive under your feet.

Eilean Donan Castle looked almost staged against its loch: a sort of perfect ruin with flags snapping in the wind. On our last day, cruising Loch Ness near Fort Augustus, I caught myself scanning for ripples even though I don’t believe in monsters (or maybe I do now). There was this moment on deck where everyone just went quiet watching clouds move across Cairngorms hills on our way back south: nobody said much after that, which felt right somehow.
