The experience

You board a coach in Edinburgh on day one and by lunchtime you're standing at Loch Lomond, watching the water flatten between green hills. The route west takes you through Glencoe first (those dramatic peaks that stop conversations mid-sentence), then down to Oban, where the day ends with an optional whisky tasting at Oban Distillery before you settle into your accommodation. Day two is the one everyone talks about. You ride the Jacobite Steam Train across the Glenfinnan Viaduct (yes, the Harry Potter bridge), and the whole thing feels slightly unreal: the engine's whistle, the viaduct dropping away beneath you, the Highlands rolling past the window. After the train ride, a short ferry crossing lands you on the Isle of Skye, where you'll spend the next two nights based in Portree. Day three is pure exploration.
