Summary

Edinburgh sightseeing cruise with wildlife views and bridge crossings

You’ll feel the wind as you glide beneath Edinburgh’s famous bridges on this 90-minute Firth of Forth sightseeing cruise. Watch for seals and puffins from the top deck, listen to stories from your local guide, and if you choose, wander Inchcolm Island’s abbey ruins before heading back across those wide Scottish waters.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the clang of metal against dock as we stepped aboard near Edinburgh — that hollow echo, mixed with a salty wind that made my eyes water a bit. Our guide, Jamie (he wore a scarf even though it was June), grinned and pointed up at the Forth Bridge. It’s so much bigger when you’re right under it — all that red steel, almost humming above our heads. I tried to take a photo but honestly, you can’t fit it all in one shot.

We drifted past the Forth Road Bridge too, which looks sleek next to its older sibling. Jamie told us about the history — apparently the original bridge is UNESCO-listed, which I didn’t know. The commentary wasn’t too much, just enough to make me pay attention between sips of coffee from the bar below deck (the cup kept sliding on the table every time we hit a wave). There were families with kids pointing at seabirds — someone spotted a puffin and everyone got excited. I didn’t see it at first but then there it was, bobbing like a little football in the water.

If you’re lucky or plan ahead, you can get off at Inchcolm Island. We did — or rather, we decided last minute after Jamie said “it’s worth it for the abbey alone.” The stones felt cool under my hands and there was this faint smell of seaweed everywhere. Some old fortifications still stand; I tried to imagine what it must’ve been like during wartime but mostly just listened to gulls arguing overhead. We didn’t stay long (the boat waits), but I still think about that quiet moment by the ruined wall.
