The Experience

“You’ll want to sit on the left!” our guide grinned as we shuffled onto the Jacobite Steam Train at Fort William — I’d barely settled in before the whistle shrieked and we lurched forward. The carriage had this soft, worn-in smell of old wood and coal smoke (like someone’s granddad’s shed, honestly), and outside it was all green hills rolling past. Someone behind us tried to spot every Harry Potter filming location — our guide was quick to point out where they’d shot that flying car scene. I’m not even a superfan but seeing that curve of the Glenfinnan Viaduct through the window? Weirdly moving. I caught myself grinning like a kid.

Mallaig surprised me. It’s just a little fishing village but there was this salty tang in the air, gulls yelling overhead, and a bunch of us ended up at a tiny café with fish pie so fresh it almost steamed up my glasses. Our group split up for lunch — some wandered along the harbor, others just sat and watched boats bobbing around. I chatted with Li (our guide) about Gaelic words for rain — apparently there are dozens — and he laughed when I tried one out loud. Probably butchered it.

The stop at Glenfinnan Visitor Centre after lunch was quieter; everyone sort of drifted toward the viewpoint waiting for that perfect shot of the steam train crossing back over the viaduct. There was this hush right before it appeared — just sheep bleating somewhere far off, then suddenly everyone scrambling for their cameras. I didn’t even get a great photo but standing there with that view… it sticks with you longer than any picture. On the way back toward Edinburgh we made one last stop in Pitlochry — legs stiff, faces wind-chapped but happy. The Highlands have this way of making you feel small but also kind of lucky to be there at all.
