The Experience

There’s this moment when the bus crests a hill near Callander and suddenly the Highlands just spill out in front of you—green and gold patches, a bit of mist hanging low. There’s something about hearing that old engine echo across Loch Shiel—it feels like time folds in on itself for a minute. We wandered down to the monument too; some folks skipped stones on the loch while Jamie explained Bonnie Prince Charlie’s story (I only half-followed but loved his accent).

The last stretch through Cairngorms was quieter—blue shadows over pine forests, sheep scattered across impossible slopes. And then: Hairy Coos! They really do look like walking rugs with horns. One nuzzled my hand (probably hoping for food). I still laugh thinking about how awkward my selfie turned out—giant cow nose right in the lens. The ride back felt slower; everyone sort of drifted into their own thoughts as Edinburgh lights came back into view.
