The Experience
“You see that window up there?” our guide, Isla, pointed above the Grassmarket with a grin. “That’s where Maggie Dickson lived—well, after she was hanged.” I almost choked on my coffee (which was still warm from the little café we ducked into when it started to drizzle). The air smelled like rain on old stone, and honestly, I hadn’t expected history to feel so alive—or so cheeky. We wandered through Edinburgh Old Town in this sort of loose parade, Isla weaving us between clumps of tourists and locals who didn’t even blink at our group. There’s something about those narrow closes off the Royal Mile—you step inside and suddenly it’s quieter, the city sounds muffled except for your own footsteps and Isla’s voice echoing weirdly off the walls.
I think I lost track of time around St Giles’ Cathedral. Isla told us about John Knox and the Reformation—she made it sound like a soap opera (in a good way). I remember touching one of the old iron railings outside; it was cold and rough under my fingers. She pointed out marks on the stones from the Great Fire of 1824—tiny scars you’d never notice unless someone showed you. We passed statues I’d walked by before without really seeing them. At some point, we all got quiet together in front of Greyfriars Bobby’s statue—I’m not usually sentimental about dogs but… yeah.
The day trip through Edinburgh Old Town isn’t just facts; it’s stories tangled up with laughter and odd silences. Isla knew everyone—a nod here to a shopkeeper, a wave there—and she didn’t mind when we stopped to peek at gravestones or ask about bodysnatchers (which is apparently less funny if you’re Scottish). My shoes were damp by the time we reached Edinburgh Castle but I barely noticed. There’s something about standing there looking down over the city that makes you feel both tiny and weirdly connected to all these people who came before. I still think about that view sometimes when it rains at home.
