The Experience

“If these stones could talk, they’d probably gossip,” our guide Jamie said as we squeezed through one of those narrow closes off the Royal Mile. He had that dry Scottish humor — not forced, just part of him. I kept brushing against the old stone walls, cold even in July, and you could smell rain on them from earlier. The city felt like it was holding its breath under all that history.

We stopped at this open space near the castle’s entrance — Jamie called it “the Esplanade” but admitted locals mostly just call it “the front.” He pointed out how Edinburgh’s streets twist and defend themselves, almost by accident. I never thought about a city being shaped by fear before. There was a gust of wind that made my scarf flap around and I remember thinking, no wonder people built fortresses here.

The main event is obviously Edinburgh Castle itself — perched right on top of that old volcano. Inside, you get hit with names from schoolbooks: Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots, William Wallace (Jamie did a pretty good impression). The Honours of Scotland are locked away behind glass — they’re smaller than I expected but somehow heavier too? Maybe it’s just knowing what they’ve survived. I tried to take in everything: echoes from the military museums, the uneven cobbles underfoot, even a whiff of gunpowder from somewhere (maybe my imagination). It’s busy but you can still find quiet corners if you let yourself wander for a minute.

I still think about that view over the city — roofs and spires stretching out under gray clouds. Jamie told us how after the last Jacobite siege in 1745, the castle stopped being a fortress and started becoming more like a symbol. He shrugged when he said it; maybe proud, maybe just used to it. We ended up back outside where bagpipes were playing somewhere below us. Not sure if I’ll ever get that sound out of my head — or if I want to.
