The experience
Seven and a half hours covers a lot of ground. The route climbs inland first, crossing Cairn o' Mount (a historic hill-pass that once carried drovers and soldiers) to reach the sweeping moorland views looking east to the North Sea and south over the Mearns. The Falls of Feugh, where the Water of Feugh cascades into the River Dee, is a stop to watch for salmon leaping upstream during spawning season. Then the tour swings toward the coast and Dunnottar Castle, the dramatic ruin perched on a cliff with views across the bay. You explore the grounds and viewpoints at your own pace during this stop.
Stonehaven is a working fishing town, not a museum piece. You have time to find lunch at one of the harbour-side spots (the guide can point you toward fresh seafood or traditional meals), and then walk the sandy beach and the boardwalk sculptures. The afternoon heads inland to Mill of Benholm, one of the few oat mills left in Aberdeenshire and listed as an exceptional survival by Historic Environment Scotland. The mill buildings, waterwheel, kiln and the miller's house sit in seven acres of orchards and gardens beside the Burn of Benholm. The day ends at Greyhope Bay and the mouth of the River Dee, a rocky shoreline where walkers and wildlife enthusiasts watch for dolphins and seabirds.
Local food and drink samples punctuate the stops: a real taste of the region woven through the day rather than a single tasting event. The guide is live and speaks English. WiFi on board means you can stay connected between stops, though the landscape itself is the draw.
What’s included
- WiFi on board.
- local food and drink samples at multiple stops.
- a live English-speaking guide throughout the day.
