The experience
How do you see the real northeast coast without spending a day driving yourself? This tour threads through villages most visitors skip entirely. Gardenstown sits on a cliff above the Moray Firth. Crovie, a ten-minute walk away, is the best-preserved 18th-century fishing village in Europe. Pennan is the village from the 1980s film "Local Hero". You walk to the harbour to see the famous phone box. The guide drives you through Fraserburgh and Peterhead, once home to over 900 fishing ships combined and still the shellfish capital of Europe. If you want to add the Kinnaird Head lighthouse and its museum, that's optional.
The coast itself is the draw. Troup Head is an RSPB nature reserve where 50,000 gannets nest on towering cliffs. You watch them hunt and see the Moray Firth spread below. The Bullers, further along, is a cluster of sea stacks, rock formations and a geological feature called "the Pot": thousands of birds wheel overhead, and puffins appear in season. Seal Beach holds a colony of 3,000 seals and counts among the finest beaches in the region. Slains Castle, the ruined fortress that inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula, sits on a headland you can walk down to.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and holds up to seven people, so the group stays small enough to move at one pace. A lunch break is included in the 8.5 hours, and the guide picks you up from your hotel in Aberdeen. The itinerary is built around the villages and the wildlife, not the clock. You move between stops at a rhythm that lets you actually stand in the places instead of just passing through.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the difference between Crovie and Gardenstown if they're only ten minutes apart?
Gardenstown is the larger of the two, perched on a cliff with views across the Moray Firth. Crovie is smaller, more isolated, and the best-preserved 18th-century fishing village in Europe. Both are working villages, not museums, and the walk between them is part of the tour.
Can I actually see puffins on this tour?
Puffins appear at Troup Head during the right season. The guide will tell you whether they're nesting when you book. The 50,000-strong gannet colony is there year-round, along with thousands of other seabirds.
Is Slains Castle included, or do I have to pay extra?
Slains Castle is an optional stop on the tour. You can choose to walk down to the ruins or skip it depending on your energy and interests. There's no extra charge if you decide to visit.
How much walking is involved over the 8.5 hours?
You'll do a ten-minute stroll from Gardenstown to Crovie, a walk down to Pennan's harbour, a stroll to Slains Castle's ruins, and time at Troup Head and Seal Beach. The guide adjusts the pace to your fitness level, and a lunch break is built into the day.
Does the tour stop in Fraserburgh and Peterhead, or just drive through?
Both towns are drive-through stops so you see how they operate as working fishing ports. Fraserburgh also has the optional Kinnaird Head lighthouse and museum if you want to add that to your day.
